I went for a walk around a bog today. The only picture I got was of a heron on top of a house opposite the parking lot. Witnesses in the house heard Jones say "why did you pee on me Pooh Bear?" A few moments later, the witness heard the son say "Mama you done stabbed me."

OwenButler: I purchased a new Lens the other day, a Canon 27-70. It's love. Heavy though. I bought myself a 50mm prime the other day. f1.7. Manual focus though. On the plus side, I bought it secondhand for ~€50. |

Okay, I have another Excel question for you guys since you all nailed my last one. I have a 200x38 block of cells, each of which contains a formula. Right now the formulas contain relative references (e.g., "=IF(I3=2,1,0)") and I want to change them to absolute references (e.g., "=IF($I$3=2,1,0)") so I can sort the rows without mucking everything up. I know how to use F4 to change the cells one at a time, but with 7,600 cells that's a massive pain. Can I select them all at once and make the change? Hrm. I could do that, but I'd still have to run it once for each column, which would be 200 times. Better than 7,600, though. I did a clumsy workaround where I pasted the values to a blank worksheet, did my sorting and calculations, then copied those values back into the original worksheet. The numbers are right, but now I can't add data to the set without doing all that copy/paste action again. I'll probably take Dethstryk's macro suggestion and figure out a macro at some point. I was taking some studio shots of a baby on Saturday and I think out of the 100 I took, only 15 used a lens other than my 50mm. That's what I want for my walk around lens. How fast is it? Fast in the focusing sense or the light sense? Both really. F2.8 so it's plenty fast for low light or available light stuff. You do pay for it in weight though, damn it's heavy and big! The AF feels really solid and smooth too, like it locks in fast and doesn't jitter around like my old zoom lens. |

I've been eying Canon EOS 450D (the new "Digital Rebel", I guess?) with EF-S 18-55 IS (F3.5 - 5.6) a 55-250mm IS (F4.0 - 5.6) for around $1000. Of course, it will be a few months before I'll be again in a position to spend, and I'll probably buy a new PC first, but it's never too early to look around, I guess. I think I'll just see how things work out with Brooke and how often we will get to have photography trips together, but I have a feeling I'll end up semi-impulsively buying some used Nikon with a bunch of equipment. Does anyone have an experience with cameras/lenses of both brands in entry-level DSLR category? |

You can't go wrong with either Canon or Nikon. Those are the two leaders in the DSLR market right now. So if you go with one of their entry level cameras (I use a Canon Rebelxt myself) you'll have MANY options for expanding your system later, including used equipment and third party stuff. The main problem with going with anyone besides Canon or Nikon isn't so much the quality of the camera (they're all pretty much equally good at entry level), it's the availability of compatible equipment. That and the fact that many books, online guides, and even workshops are geared specifically for Canon and/or Nikon users. So go try out both if you can to see which feels better in your hands. Thanks! I have Canon in high regard from all the positive opinions, but I can't say I've heard a bad thing about Nikon, either. As I might have mentioned, my current SLR (Zenit) is a pretty faithful copy of some Nikon from that era, so I thought I might be better used to Nikon. But you're right, I'll have to try them out to know for sure. |

I've been Nikon ever since I upgraded from my old Pentax K1000. The only annoying thing was that niether the film camera I had nor my new D80 has a flash sync cable plug, so I had to get a hotshoe adapter. But that's a pretty minor annoyance. The D80 has a great interface, very quick to set up shots once you're used to the two wheels. Witnesses in the house heard Jones say "why did you pee on me Pooh Bear?" A few moments later, the witness heard the son say "Mama you done stabbed me."

It has no issues, though with Nikon I think you probably get more for your money at that price range. If I would have done more research I probably would have bought the D80 or D90. Not taking away from the Rebel which I love. The low end Nikons handle low light better than the low end Canons, and the D90 which is about $200 more than the Rebel has HD video. The D80 also feels more solid than my Rebel, it's a bit heavier and feels like less of a toy. Lenses for Nikon are usually a bit more expensive than similar Canon versions. After playing with my Rebel and the D80 that my Dad and brother bought, I'd say the D80 (and now D90) is probably better, though you pay a little more. Now if you compare the D50 or D60, I might choose the Rebel over it. Say Nikon D50/60 < Rebel XTI< Nikon D80< Rebel XSI < Nikon D90 <Canon 50D (which is where my knowledge leaves off). |

I had a brief play of a buddies 5dmkII a while ago. Felt extremly nifty in hand. I have been sorely tempted to save up and get one, but considering how much I have to learn with my current camera, I've come to my senses. I figure if I want to save/spend that kind of money on photography gear, it will be on lenses instead. |

I'd like to movie up to the 50D just because I hate how my images look at higher ISO, and that's been improved in the 50D. Other than that I'd be fine using money on nothing but lenses. |
