PlanetCrap Photography Thread 2009
March 9th 2009, 00:29 MSK by Milan Brezovský Now that the spring is here, we've been lured outside by ubiquitous pheromones and a lack of good games to play, so we might as well take out our cameras and start talking about the mysterious art of stealing souls here. Other types of art are also acceptable, as long as there is some kind of stealing going on. |

As far as I know he "just got better." My guess: he chugged a bunch of stem cells. blog | Twitter | The Psychology of Gaming

It's too bad, once he started to enjoy life a little he just didn't fit in as well around here. |

To stay here you have to either be dying or already dead on the inside. |

I killed a man in Reno. Just to watch him die. "One part disembowels me while another slowly eats its way through the gas line. As I bleed out on the floor, it reminds me that I need to buy milk." - Jibble

OK, photo question- I just bought my first digital SLR, a Canon XS. I know it's entry level, but that's OK because that's where I'm at DSLR-wise. I figure I'll learn a bunch of stuff, then one day maybe upgrade. My question is about IS lenses. Most of the included material in the box basically touts the value of lenses with built-in image stabilization. Is it really a useful feature, or is Canon just trying to get me to buy the more expensive lenses. I would imagine it is useful, but does it really make a difference? 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

It depends a bit on what you are going to be doing. If you take pictures on a tripod 90% of the time, it's not worth it. Most IS systems have to be turned off when on a tripod, some even turn themselves off. If you are taking pictures of fast moving sports, or extremely high shutter speeds, it's also not worth it. In this situation you usually need to use a fast shutter speed to capture the action. IS can stabilise things so you can potentially use slower shutter speeds, but that's no good if it will blur the action. Where IS becomes effective is when you are hand holding your camera and you have limited or average light. Say you are taking a portrait and to get a good exposure you need f4, 1/100s. An IS lens might produce a crisper shot at 1/100s, or allow you to get a reasonable shot at f5, 1/50s instead. It gives you a little bit of flexibility there with the aperture, which might be what you want. Congrats on getting a camera. Doesn't matter what level it is at all! When you do upgrade you might find it better value to spend the money on lenses rather than a new body. All the camera bodies are awesome now! |

Thanks, Owen! 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

Owen has said pretty much everything you need to know. IS is useful in low light, you may be able to go from 1/120s to 1/60s without losing much sharpness. Any other time you aren't going to notice the difference. My T1i came with the same IS lens the XS kit comes with and I can say the pictures out of that lens look much better than the regular 18-55mm my first camera came with. Whether that has anything to do with the IS, I don't know. I don't think so though. |

Thanks, JJ. I purchased a this camera mainly for my trip up to the Pacific Northwest this summer, so I plan to shoot landscapes, cityscapes, and family shot, but nothing along the lines of 'low-light portrait' stuff. I purchased a Canon 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Zoom Lens at the same time, but it's not an IS lens. So I have the XS kit lens and this zoom. Do any of you have good websites or primers to recommend? 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

When are you coming up here and where are you going to be, Yot? I'd be happy to buy you some grub and a beer if you want to get together. "Fucking Radio Shack. It's a wonder they even know how to use a bathroom and don't just walk around all day with shit in their pants." - smds

Also, how much did that camera run you, Yot? I've been meaning to get one for my wife, as we've talked about before, and I think I'll be doing so this November (bday time). "Fucking Radio Shack. I'll be in Portland from around July 10-14 and Seattle from the 15-18th or so. We haven't finalized our dates. 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

For landscapes you want something wide, so you'll probably use your kit lens. You shouldn't have to worry about either one, both will be fine outside even if it's cloudy and rainy. |

Perkins- It was around $500 at Best Buy for the camera kit, plus another $200 for the zoom. You could probably get better deals online, but it was convenient for me to get it at BB. I'll shoot you an email the closer I get to the date. 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog
