PlanetCrap Photography Thread 2009
March 9th 2009, 00:29 MSK by Milan Brezovský Now that the spring is here, we've been lured outside by ubiquitous pheromones and a lack of good games to play, so we might as well take out our cameras and start talking about the mysterious art of stealing souls here. Other types of art are also acceptable, as long as there is some kind of stealing going on. |

You are my Google, G-Man. I always assumed that's what the "G" stood for, in fact. Thanks! I actually saw that first macro after a Google search myself, but it's all big and scary looking and looked like too much for my delicate girl hands. The second one looks more my speed. blog | photoblog | PlanetCrap Flickr group

yeah, pics would be horrible in this thread. Just horrible. "some of those words want to be other words." - LP

#26 by Jamie I love my f/1.4 50mm prime. It stays on my camera most of the time. Is there any noticeable difference between the f/1.4 and the f/1.9 50mm? There's such a huge price difference. |
The depth of field at its lowest aperture will be much shallower on the f/1.4; it'll also allow you to use faster shutter speeds in lower light conditions. Really it depends on how much you value those things whether or not the price difference is worth it. If you're mainly shooting outdoors then there's probably not much point. |

Terrific TED talk. "Common sense; it is so rare, it is a god damn superpower."

#53 by jshj Is there any noticeable difference between the f/1.4 and the f/1.9 50mm? There's such a huge price difference. Yes, lots. I bought the f/1.9 first since it was like $50. It's still a fantastic value at that price (hence the nickname "the thrifty fifty"), but you can tell it's cheap relative not nicer lenses. More plastic, lighter (I assume because of the plastic and fewer optics), and the auto focus speed is S-L-O-W. After reading a bunch of glowing reviews I splurged on the f/1.4. The auto focus speed and image quality are WAY, WAY better. I was really shocked by how much sharper the images are and how much better the colors look. I actually very rarely use it opened all the way to 1.4, but the IQ and auto focus speed made it worth it to me. blog | photoblog | PlanetCrap Flickr group

Actually, jshj has the Nikon version, it's much more impressive looking than my Canon 50mm and feels a bit heavier (possibly sturdier?). Isn't it metal Josh? #57 by CheesyPoof #53 by jshj Is there any noticeable difference between the f/1.4 and the f/1.9 50mm? There's such a huge price difference. So we have a new lurker. Bill Powers and jh0, you better step up your game. That dude isn't new, he's been lurking forever. If I talk about having sex with his sister-in-law he may get embarrassed and go back to lurking. The photo thread must have drawn him out because he's a big photography fan. |

Does anyone know if the new Facebook changes will let you do anything practical with friends lists? I really want a way to add PC nicknames to people. I have no idea who some of you are, just that you're friends with other crappers. |

gaggle (#55): There are so MANY good TED talks. I recently ran across this one as well. "some of those words want to be other words." - LP

#59 by jjohnsen Actually, jshj has the Nikon version, it's much more impressive looking than my Canon 50mm and feels a bit heavier (possibly sturdier?). Isn't it metal Josh? It feels more sturdy than my 70-300mm Quantaray. The pictures come out incredible. I wasn't sure that a 1.4 would improve upon. |
jj - There's going to be an interface update soon that will make friends lists more prominent. I'm crossing my fingers that it has something like what you're talking about rolled in with it. \"Making love to a woman is like working on an assembly line. No matter how good you are at it, you\'ll eventually be replaced by a foreigner or a machine.\"

#62 by Matt Perkins Hey that is interesting. Seems like a short excerpt from a longer presentation.. do you know if we can see a fuller version? But yeah TED talks are often amazing. Very inspirational and fascinating subjects and speakers. "Common sense; it is so rare, it is a god damn superpower."

An interesting coincidence, my coworker has just bought an 50mm f1.8 (canon) for her dad today. Of course, i didn't do anything other than hold it for a while, but it's still an interesting coincidence. Sh...shut up, it's a funny coincidence. |

TED talks are pretty good, but also pretty overrated. |
Oh fiddlesticks, just enjoy them when an interesting subject is brought up. "Common sense; it is so rare, it is a god damn superpower."
I'm not criticising the talks I'm criticising the people who advertise them to me as life changing must sees. They're good. |

#70 by lwf I'm not criticising the talks I'm criticising the people who advertise them to me as life changing must sees. Ah. Well that's fair. "Common sense; it is so rare, it is a god damn superpower."

#75 by Milan Brezovský That is one hideous knife. True dat. So you wrote that blog entry about the WoW torture quest Charles? "Common sense; it is so rare, it is a god damn superpower."

I also took notice when I played through it, it does seem like a weird, slightly creepy message to send. I kinda regret just pushing through it, but my Horde Death Knight probably thinks it was perfectly fine :) More to the point though: I was in grind mode, and didn't think about whether or not I wanted to do it until later. Which I half suspect/hope is Blizzard's message with the whole thing, that we're so used to doing anything for XP that we don't even stop considering our actions. I can appreciate the quest chain on those terms, as a provocative reminder of sorts. On the other hand, if it's there because they truly didn't think about it then that just sucks. (btw I don't think you'll suffer from not completing the chain, it leads to a place you can get to on your own iirc. Well, you'll lose out on the XP of course) "Common sense; it is so rare, it is a god damn superpower."

I deliver to this thread: Dinner! THIS is the kind of food a wealthy manager eats? My world is crumbling! You seriously need a female, man! #74 by Charles I deliver to this thread: Dinner! Asparagus is overrated, but the mushrooms look pretty good. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Mushrooms are way overrated, but the asparagus looks good. Game Developers: Don't forget the zombie monkeys.

Mushrooms are the work of Satan. "If you watch the movie "Jaws" backwards, it's a movie about a shark that keeps throwing up people until they have to open a beach." - /b/tard

Satan knows tasty. |

Bring on the 'shrooms! Greenery-wise I'm more of a broccoli man myself. "Common sense; it is so rare, it is a god damn superpower."

My wife made bacon mac and cheese yesterday. I should have taken a picture. It was crazy good and cheesy. At first I though that there was too much cheese sauce for the amount of pasta, but the pasta soaked it up when it baked and the sauce firmed up real good. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Just finished season 5 of The Wire. Fuck, what a damn fine show that was. It's not often that I get all emotional at the last episode of a season, but The Wire managed to do it 5 times. I even cried of happiness when Bubbles gave his speech saying he'd been clean for a year. And just like the show to conclude some storylines, but leave most of them wide open. It was great seeing all the old faces back in the last few episodes. "IT consultant of perfect lovemaking art."

It was indeed a great show. I'm probably going to watch the whole thing again with the new gf. Witnesses in the house heard Jones say "why did you pee on me Pooh Bear?" A few moments later, the witness heard the son say "Mama you done stabbed me."
I've also been thinking about re-watching it sometime in future, maybe in a year or so. I think it might be about time to re-watch Arrested Development too. |
Hey hey hey now, no spoilers. I only just finished Season 3. I know, it's an old show and it's hard to prevent spoilers. I'll just try and ignore posts that talk about it. |
I was really sad when that one guy died, but less so when that other guy died. Witnesses in the house heard Jones say "why did you pee on me Pooh Bear?" A few moments later, the witness heard the son say "Mama you done stabbed me."
I had a tough time making it through season 2, but it's a great show. |
It wasn't until season three that I started understanding the love for the series. One and two were fine, but I kept wondering why there was so much hype. |
Yeah, it's a slow build. It wasn't till at least episode 4-6 that I liked the show at all, and I didn't start loving it till the second season. Witnesses in the house heard Jones say "why did you pee on me Pooh Bear?" A few moments later, the witness heard the son say "Mama you done stabbed me."
gaggle - So you wrote that blog entry about the WoW torture quest Charles? Yeah. It stuck out like a sore thumb. And so far, that kind of crazed right-wing rah-rah mentality is all over the expansion. It's kind of gross. Both mushrooms and asparagus are awesome, and anyone who disagrees must have licked too many flagpoles in the winter. No.
Thinking... No.
That's not a euphemism. No.

#92 by Caryn It wasn't until season three that I started understanding the love for the series. One and two were fine, but I kept wondering why there was so much hype. I have to say it grabbed me right at the very first episode because of the documetary-like approach to filming. It also lacked most of the stuff I hate about TV (foreshadowing, the obligatory happy endings, thick morality,...). The hardest part to watch was the second half of season four. So goddamn depressing. "IT consultant of perfect lovemaking art."

There is no God in a universe where the Wire doesn't win major awards. Simply the best television of the last several years. Funk. |
