PlanetCrap Photography Thread 2009
March 9th 2009, 00:29 MSK by Milan Brezovský

Now that the spring is here, we've been lured outside by ubiquitous pheromones and a lack of good games to play, so we might as well take out our cameras and start talking about the mysterious art of stealing souls here. Other types of art are also acceptable, as long as there is some kind of stealing going on.

Yes, lots. I bought the f/1.9 first since it was like $50. It's still a fantastic value at that price (hence the nickname "the thrifty fifty"), but you can tell it's cheap relative not nicer lenses. More plastic, lighter (I assume because of the plastic and fewer optics), and the auto focus speed is S-L-O-W.

Actually, jshj has the Nikon version, it's much more impressive looking than my Canon 50mm and feels a bit heavier (possibly sturdier?).  Isn't it metal Josh?

Is there any noticeable difference between the f/1.4 and the f/1.9 50mm? There's such a huge price difference.

So we have a new lurker. Bill Powers and jh0, you better step up your game.

That dude isn't new, he's been lurking forever.   If I talk about having sex with his sister-in-law he may get embarrassed and go back to lurking.  The photo thread must have drawn him out because he's a big photography fan.

Does anyone know if the new Facebook changes will let you do anything practical with friends lists?  I really want   a way to add PC nicknames to people.  I have no idea who some of you are, just that you're friends with other crappers.

It feels more sturdy than my 70-300mm Quantaray. The pictures come out incredible. I wasn't sure that a 1.4 would improve upon.

Hey that is interesting. Seems like a short excerpt from a longer presentation.. do you know if we can see a fuller version?

But yeah TED talks are often amazing. Very inspirational and fascinating subjects and speakers.

An interesting coincidence, my coworker has just bought an 50mm f1.8 (canon) for her dad today. Of course, i didn't do anything other than hold it  for a while, but it's still an interesting coincidence.

I also took notice when I played through it, it does seem like a weird, slightly creepy message to send. I kinda regret just pushing through it, but my Horde Death Knight probably thinks it was perfectly fine :) More to the point though: I was in grind mode, and didn't think about whether or not I wanted to do it until later. Which I half suspect/hope is Blizzard's message with the whole thing, that we're so used to doing anything for XP that we don't even stop considering our actions.

I can appreciate the quest chain on those terms, as a provocative reminder of sorts. On the other hand, if it's there because they truly didn't think about it then that just sucks.

(btw I don't think you'll suffer from not completing the chain, it leads to a place you can get to on your own iirc. Well, you'll lose out on the XP of course)

My wife made bacon mac and cheese yesterday. I should have taken a picture. It was crazy good and cheesy. At first I though that there was too much cheese sauce for the amount of pasta, but the pasta soaked it up when it baked and the sauce firmed up real good.

Just finished season 5 of The Wire. Fuck, what a damn fine show that was. It's not often that I get all emotional at the last episode of a season, but The Wire managed to do it 5 times.
I even cried of happiness when Bubbles gave his speech saying he'd been clean for a year. And just like the show to conclude some storylines, but leave most of them wide open.
It was great seeing all the old faces back in the last few episodes.

Yeah, it's a slow build.  It wasn't till at least episode 4-6 that I liked the show at all, and I didn't start loving it till the second season.

Yeah.  It stuck out like a sore thumb.  And so far, that kind of crazed right-wing rah-rah mentality is all over the expansion.  It's kind of gross.

I have to say it grabbed me right at the very first episode because of the documetary-like approach to filming. It also lacked most of the stuff I hate about TV (foreshadowing, the obligatory happy endings, thick morality,...).

The hardest part to watch was the second half of season four. So goddamn depressing.

I miss Deadwood.

Seriously though, it is hard to choose between The Wire, Breaking Bad, and Deadwood. All so good. Breaking Bad does run the risk of screwing it up in the coming seasons(s), though.

So, freaking TiVo. Last night I get home and find out that my Series 3 HD TiVo is frozen up. I call customer service and after leading me through some troubleshooting the guy tells me sorry, it'd dead. Not gonna work. But they'll replace it for just $150! I get pissed and tell the guy that this thing is not even 2 years old and cost me $300 --on sale! It's ridiculous that a high-end piece of electronics like this should die and that they should charge me $150 to fix it.

He says there's nothing he can do and no way he can lower the price, so I tell him I want to suspend my subscription while I investigate getting a DVR from my cable provider and that I'd probably be calling him back soon to cancel outright. He transfers me to one of their "cancellations experts" and I sit on hold for 10 minutes getting more and more annoyed.

When the cancellation guy comes on the line he looks over the notes on my account and tells me if I don't cancel he will replace the TiVo unit for $50. I ask him why the first guy tried to get me for $150 and he pleads ignorance. But while I'm still pissed that this expensive thing broke so quickly, I can live with $50 and tell him to ship me out the replacement.  It's a classic case of price anchoring --getting you to anchor your perception of value on an inflated number, then make the lower number look like less than it is because you started out so high. It's transparently manipulative, but I like the TiVo product. Bastards.

And just to add one more insult to injury, they have to charge my credit card the value of the new unit until they receive my broken one back in the mail, at which time they'll refund the charge. Fine, except the charge they put on my card is over 800. If I have to pay that off to avoid paying the CC interest rate, I'm gonna be even more pissed. And I can't even watch HDTV right now because I have no cable box to put the cable cards into.

TL;DR!

Jaime-

I had a Series 2 TiVo die on me once, and all I did was buy it a new hard drive and format it with Instant Cake. I've used the software to put bigger drives in my 2 TiVos, and it's worked fine. The software is 20 bucks.
