Duke Nukem 4 Never?
May 16th 2009, 20:04 MSD by OmegaFoRCe According to Shacknews (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/58519) 3D Realms is officially closing doors. What can we learn from 3D Realms' departure from the industry? |

The first four letters my three-year-old has learned are A, B, X, and Y. What can we learn from this example about my parenting choices? |

That letters DNF aren't interesting enough for him? "assemblerer is like the dorkier male version of ryslin. His posts make my head hurt." -- Mister Nutty

I bet there IS no DNF source code. TT is going to find out the trailers were all a UT2K4 mod. 52 Weeks and Something's On Movie Blog

Sandra and me went for a boat ride today. It was raining a bit at first, but then we had a nice weather, and I got to drive for a while. [/Warren] "assemblerer is like the dorkier male version of ryslin. His posts make my head hurt." -- Mister Nutty

Derek Smart provides his analysis of the situation. |
|
3d Realms tried to create the perfect Duke. They discovered after 4 restarts that the perfect Duke could not be created. The obsession to create the perfect Duke trumped the self-awareness that such a task was impossible. TT made a business decision that this new Duke was a loser, and not worth another 5 million. 3d Realms should have just made a series of fun Duke Nukems. We should have Duke 4, Duke 5, Duke 6, with Duke 7 coming out later this year. each would have probably sold 1 to 3 million and would have been profitable. GB just wasted 12 years and probably 20 million. Don't put too much credence in Derek Smart's legal analysis stated in his posts. We don't know what the contracts between 3d Realms and ultimately TT actually said. The initial contract likely had an assignment provision which would allow TT to be put in the same shoes as the original contracting party with 3d Realms. We also don't know which business entity signed what. I think it's interesting that Apogee is now an LLC and not a Ltd. I suspect Apogee sold all of their assets to the LLC in an attempt to avoid liability from TT. Problem is, this may constitute a violation of UFTA (fraudulent transfers). Also, don't be shocked if the actual conflict is resolved in a private arbitration. Most contracts of this type contain an arbitration clause. I cannot imagine both parties would waive that clause. I'm curious to see how this goes. |
|
The fact that topics about DNF getting cancelled are still getting approved a week and a half after DNF has been cancelled proves that Duke is a valuable IP. |
|
Michael Jackson stories sell, but his records don't. Not sure this proves the Duke IP is worth much. Market research would show how valuable the Duke IP is worth. I'm going to guess it's a niche market which shrinks every year. |

Who is Paul supposed to be again? Paul Steed or something? I mean he's got a low UID, but I honestly don't remember ever seeing the guy post before. |

Busy working etc. GF is out of town so I'm catching up on some gaming. Playing through Mass Effect and Bioshock. |

Paul is a programmer in the industry and a PC old-timer. Shame on you G-Man for not remembering that. |
|
Wait, does this mean Apogee is shutting down too? That's one of the oldest pieces of PC game history going away. Not that the brand was actively used anymore, but still. "IT consultant of perfect lovemaking art."

#18 by G-Man Playing through Mass Effect and Bioshock. Mass Effect is boring. Haven't fired it up in a month. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

I'm also trying to learn Japanese via the DS game. Been playing it for an hour a day for the past few months but it is slow going. I'm on lesson 46 or so now but the game has a lot of flaws and I feel like I really don't have mastery over a lot of basic concepts so I probably need a traditional book with some exercises to do to supplement the game. |
|
Mass Effect was great. Cheesy has no taste. Game Developers: Don't forget the zombie monkeys.

Mass Effect sucked. Chunkstyle has not taste. |

Mass Effect was OK, from the 15 minutes that I played. My tongue's nerves work OK. |

TF2 Spy video. Brilliant. Don't know if its old or new, but I hadn't seen it before. My love for Valve grows. |

Mass Effect was (for the most part) great. Let's meet up, Chunkstyle, we've just arrived to our room in Chicago, Division st. Staying for 2 full days, heading back to AL on Wed. "assemblerer is like the dorkier male version of ryslin. His posts make my head hurt." -- Mister Nutty

The Infiltrator is a tech-savvy warrior, able to win battles by quickly disabling and killing enemies. These soldiers focus on unlocking alternate routes, gaining access to good equipment, and obtaining an advantageous position over enemies in combat 1) Tech-savvy warrior: yes, this is true. You can do damage and debuffs. 2) Win battles quickly: not so much 3) Focus on unlocking alternate routes: This is the biggest joke so far. There aren't any alternate routes. 4) Gaining access to good equipment: Doesn't seem like it. I have to use pistols in a majority of combat as I get ganked to quickly with sniper rifles (arguably good). 5) Advantageous position over enemies: See #3. This class sounded like a cool one to play but it's the most boring one. I made the mistake of reading the class descriptions and trying to have fun. Also, hacking mini-game is a QTE. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

Saints Row continues to please. I came across a random activity and started it up to find myself sitting on a 4 wheeler...on fire. After spending half an hour ramming things and lighting them on fire, I took a moment to reflect on fuck you, Rockstar. |

The worst part of ME was driving/climbing side quests (the driving/shooting itself wasn't that bad). Cheesy, I think the (4) was supposed to mean "can hack into equipment caches". I used some combo engineer/hacker/psychic class, I think, maybe actually the one that you mentioned, and I liked it. Ultimate pistols and sniper guns were awesome, EMP "spells" were pretty useful, too. "assemblerer is like the dorkier male version of ryslin. His posts make my head hurt." -- Mister Nutty

#37 by Charles Mass Effect was a great story and presentation wrapped in a mediocre game. Yes. Played Plants vs. Zombies or Rock Band 2 this weekend, depending on whether my wife wanted to use the computer or the TV. Gaming diversification FTW! Rock Band 2 is interesting for me. On the one hand, I'm still getting better at it the more I play. My hand now reflexively slide into place when green or orange notes come up, and I don't even think about it. And the HO/PO largely happen without my thinking about it. And of course I got all the 2-note chord combinations down to reflex level by now. So that's good. On the other hand, it's clear I have no native talent with this game and the progression is slow. I still can't go halfway down the set list (sorted by difficulty) without hitting a brick wall on Hard. Some stuff just seems like my brain flat out can't grip it. For example, for the life of me I can't pass Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac because of that rapid series of B+O, O notes. My brain just can't figure out how to tell my fingers to hit those for some reason. Anyway, as long as they keep pumping out the DLC I guess I'll have enough mid-difficulty stuff to choose from. But I would pay $60 right now for a new Rock Band game that let me rate songs (so they could be weighted in random sets) and save set lists. |
|
ME is basically just an adventure game ala Indigo Prophecy. More interactive movie than game really. |
