Duke Nukem 4 Never?
May 16th 2009, 20:04 MSD by OmegaFoRCe

According to Shacknews (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/58519) 3D Realms is officially closing doors. What can we learn from 3D Realms' departure from the industry?

Wait, does this mean Apogee is shutting down too? That's one of the oldest pieces of PC game history going away. Not that the brand was actively used anymore, but still.

Mass Effect is boring. Haven't fired it up in a month.

I'm also trying to learn Japanese via the DS game. Been playing it for an hour a day for the past few months but it is slow going. I'm on lesson 46 or so now but the game has a lot of flaws and I feel like I really don't have mastery over a lot of basic concepts so I probably need a traditional book with some exercises to do to supplement the game.

The Infiltrator is a tech-savvy warrior, able to win battles by quickly disabling and killing enemies. These soldiers focus on unlocking alternate routes, gaining access to good equipment, and obtaining an advantageous position over enemies in combat

1) Tech-savvy warrior: yes, this is true. You can do damage and debuffs.
2) Win battles quickly: not so much
3) Focus on unlocking alternate routes: This is the biggest joke so far. There aren't any alternate routes.
4) Gaining access to good equipment: Doesn't seem like it. I have to use pistols in a majority of combat as I get ganked to quickly with sniper rifles (arguably good).
5) Advantageous position over enemies: See #3.

This class sounded like a cool one to play but it's the most boring one. I made the mistake of reading the class descriptions and trying to have fun.

Also, hacking mini-game is a QTE.

The worst part of ME was driving/climbing side quests (the driving/shooting itself wasn't that bad).

Cheesy, I think the (4) was supposed to mean "can hack into equipment caches". I used some combo engineer/hacker/psychic class, I think, maybe actually the one that you mentioned, and I liked it. Ultimate pistols and sniper guns were awesome, EMP "spells" were pretty useful, too.

Mass Effect was a great story and presentation wrapped in a mediocre game.

Yes.

Played Plants vs. Zombies or Rock Band 2 this weekend, depending on whether my wife wanted to use the computer or the TV. Gaming diversification FTW!

Rock Band 2 is interesting for me. On the one hand, I'm still getting better at it the more I play. My hand now reflexively slide into place when green or orange notes come up, and I don't even think about it. And the HO/PO largely happen without my thinking about it. And of course I got all the 2-note chord combinations down to reflex level by now. So that's good.

On the other hand, it's clear I have no native talent with this game and the progression is slow. I still can't go halfway down the set list (sorted by difficulty) without hitting a brick wall on Hard. Some stuff just seems like my brain flat out can't grip it. For example, for the life of me I can't pass Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac because of that rapid series of B+O, O notes. My brain just can't figure out how to tell my fingers to hit those for some reason.

Anyway, as long as they keep pumping out the DLC I guess I'll have enough mid-difficulty stuff to choose from. But I would pay $60 right now for a new Rock Band game that let me rate songs (so they could be weighted in random sets) and save set lists.

For me it was an action game. I loved that the game respected my lack of interest in its RPG elements and allowed me to just mostly run and gun. Pretty awesome in that respect, difficult to dislike a game that shapes itself to your needs.

ME is a good game in which presentation and awesomeness carry it over the top to gaming greatness. Sure, it has some flaws, but it's damn fun and interesting. And maybe they decided having a thousand generic worlds to explore wasn't as useful in the second one...

Don't put too much credence in Derek Smart's legal analysis stated in his posts.

Especially since he flat out gets some things wrong.  He says Take2 offered to buy the Duke IP for $30 million, when what actually happened was they offered to sell back the publishing rights for $30 million.

The studio did confirm that the DNF team has been let go, but expressed a desire to "co-create" games based on the character in the future.

My favorite Scott Miller quote:

When people say something like this, they so clearly do not understand marketing at all, especially the principles of positioning. No character can ever topple Duke as the leading WASP action hero, just as no character will ever topple Lara Croft as the leading female action/adventurer. Think of these characters as the Coke and Pepsi of the game industry. These characters earned their leading spots by being the first of their kind, and by being great at what they do. Much like James Bond, who is the quintessential action spy -- there have many many attempts to top Bond but it will never be done, as he was the first and the first practically always wins (unless they self-destruct, but that's another story).

Duke and Lara will be around 20 years from now, still the leading action gaming characters of their type.

He wrote this in 2002.

#65 by yotsuya
2009-05-19 06:06:51
Here's another bit of comedy gold:

I'm sure you know a game wins. Most hit movies cost $40 plus million, and often much higher, so the studio is in a big hole to begin with. DNF will cost $5 million tops to make on all platforms, and make the publisher at least $200 million gross across all platforms. So right away the game has a huge advantage.

So based on LP's linked article, Scott was only off by $15 million dollars.
