Valve keeps milking zombies

Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played. Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch. So, let's interview the resident Valve employee on the chainsaw details. |

Why would I need to decipher your APIs to get at the data? All I need are the data formats to merge two (currently) incompatible clients and of course some meaningful way to link that data together. I'm just building a bridge man, we could give a shit what your super secret APIs do. Now to make 2 different programs inter-operate in a real-time way, then yes, I may need to know what parameters i need to pass to your APIs... ...Or I just make another set of the merged data on the fly as my bridge runs and work off that. It's "My Data" ,though the program may be yours. Obfuscate your program all you want, but if you are obfuscating my data you need to stop doing that... Zep-- w0rd up!

Looks like a lot of overblown verbiage for what ultimately amounts to just another lame attempt at object oriented programming to make it easier for non-programmers to do more sophisticated work themselves. The whole project seems to be just a scripting engine used to create "converters" to act as bridges between legacy apps, coupled with some sort of graphic layout engine where you can represent legacy systems and their connections visually using symbols. Basically it is just Jeskola Buzz but for boring business stuff like integrating apps. This has been done a few dozen times already, despite their claims to the contrary that there is nothing on the commercial market to match their product. I mean this is basically the business model behind Salesforce.com, SAP etc., i.e. building a platform to use as a framework for systems integration. The only difference with their proposal is maybe the details of the graphic overlay (hard to tell what the implementation looks like from the text) and the fact that they plan to "open source" the system. The real problem with their idea is that it doesn't really solve the major problems of integration, in that is doesn't help you actually integrate the data models used by legacy apps or eliminate the need to keep the legacy hardware and software around. So you lose out on some of the primary reasons to push for integration in the first place in terms of saving on support costs etc. |

Exactly, except they are also trying to layer a relational database on top of it all, plus directory services functions ala Active Directory. Also, these Navy/DoD guys apparently smoke some good dope. From the patent application: [0014]In traditional object-oriented development, object behavior, e.g. services, methods, attributes, etc., is defined by a "class", where all objects of a particular class have the same behavior. Any changes to behavior are implemented by programming a new class. However, GINA takes a different approach: rather than adapting behavior by creating or changing classes, it uses multi-purpose classes that are designed to implement behavior through collections of configurable, multi-purpose components. GINA's implementation of information objects through these collections of configured components enables complete configurability. [0015]The second is that GINA is built as a GINA application. Making GINA a GINA application, coupled with the implications of the first principle, results in significant advantages in addressing the six (6) extra requirements identified above. [0016]Since GINA manages information objects, and GINA is a GINA application, GINA has an information object representation of information objects. GINA enables this information object representation of information objects by providing a component for all of the characteristics of an information object: services, properties, and relationships. The services and properties of information objects can be directly associated with components through information objects. A new model was created to express the relationships between information objects as information objects: Vector-Relational Data Modeling (VRDM). [0017]VRDM expresses a relationship from one information object to another information object as an information object by specifying the relationship, the characteristics of that relationship, and the use of that relationship by the first information object. VRDM represents all three of these constructs as information objects whose relationships, in turn, are expressed through VRDM as information objects in their own right. This build up of VRDM using VRDM is an example of one of the characteristics of GINA: the iterative process of assembling primitive constructs that are then used to configure larger constructs and then larger constructs until GINA is completely assembled. GINA's use of this iterative process to create complexity from a few concepts allows for a very high level of configurability, much higher than using a more traditional, programmed approach. I don't think I've ever heard a system claim it can integrate and then relate all data like data blobs that can communicate with each other. At least not as simply as these guys are claiming.
