Modern Warfare 2 - No Dedicated Servers.  Are other developers going to follow suit?
November 11th 2009, 17:00 MSK by teenageriot

Could this be the start of a new trend in order to try to squeeze more money out of the PC community?

Although this recent announcement has sent shockwaves through the PC gaming community, I think the overall response has been rather mild.  Currently the petition in favor of the Dedicated Servers holds little over 140,000 signatures, I'd imagine with changes as chocking as these we would stand together to prevent this from happening in the future.

Again, with the new IWnet matchmaking system they are getting rid of the following:

no more choosing what level you want to play
no more connecting to a low ping games by choice
no more clan matches
no more mods
no more custom maps
no more filtering matches
no more joining on to a game with all your mates
no more high capacity matches (eg. 30/40/50 people in a match)
no more benifits of playing online over the console version

What do you think?

In one of them you're leveling up your persistent character, and in the other you're engaging in tedious busywork. CS sucked.

They're not even remotely similar Matt. Give it up.

CS is still one of the best, and fun, tactical FPS multiplayer games out there. Even though it's extremely dated now, I still go back and play it from time to time.

BF2 replaced it for me with its large scale battles, vehicles and less focus on choke points and more on holding specific places on a larger map.

But CS did not suck, sir, it did not. Maybe you sucked at it...

I cannot avoid responding to this obvious troll. The in-game "economy" aspects of CS are not tedious busywork, they are a mechanism to add "inertia" to a particular team's wins or losses and smooth out some of the random nature of the game on a team versus team level. From a gameplay perspective it adds another layer of strategic depth in terms of choices for losing teams to make.

The real problem with CS is that the game is rarely played how it was intended (i.e. with stable, relatively evenly matched teams that cooperate and communicate well) except at an expert level, at which point the game becomes insanely boring. Ever watch professional CS tournaments?

Yeah, I agree completely with this. I still play it from time to time, but only for nostaglia sake. It was pretty good back in the day when I knew of a couple of servers that had good people trying to work as teams and was well moderated.

So since the game unlocked on Steam, I'd just like to say that the matchmaking works awesomely and I'd much rather use this than deal with dedicated servers and idiot admins.

Also, holy fucking god the leveling in multiplayer is addictive. I never got into MP in the first COD because it blew on the PC, but this is great.

My first match I got a five-kill streak and the kill I got with that kill streak reward was the final kill of the match, so everyone got to watch the glorious replay of me smoking a dude with a remote-controlled missile. I got an award for having the highest k/d ratio (6/1) and an award for having the fewest deaths.

Then I played about five more games and did horribly in them all, but still. That first game was pretty sweet.

I still need to finish Dead Space. I'm at the final boss fight (at least I think it's the final one) and it's pretty tough. Still not used to the gamepad. Then I think I'll continue with Far Cry 2 as well.

And of course in the mean time I've picked up Lego Star Wars 2 (Original trilogy) and PGR3 which I might never actually end up playing, but those were cheap so it's okay.

I just finished the single player of MW2 and ohmygodohmygod. I never played Modern Warfare 1 and only really decided to play this one because I figured it was popular and as a game dev I should really be able to reference it. Oh my GOD, that was hands-down one of the best game experiences I've EVER had. I'm so glad I decided to play it.

It's sad to me that people want to measure its worth by the quantity of hours. Those hours I spent with it this weekend were quality-wise far and above some of the 20-30 hour games I've played in the past. This surpassed its $60 price tag in quality, to me. I can't recall a single game that made me have literal lumps in my throat or nearly drop the controller with excitement, or nearly leap off the couch and shout "NOOOOOOOO!" because of storyline twists and excitement.

I haven't even tried Spec Ops or MP yet. Gonna try at least MP tomorrow.

Also, I have a serious crush on Soap MacTavish.

Caryn - Soap is your main character in the first Modern Warfare. Suffice to say, I punched the air in celebration towards the end of MW2.

Slight MW2 spoilers...

Yep, I finished the sp campaign recently too and thought it was tightly constructed, awesome, and completely devoid of filler. Just one set piece after another. A lot like Halo ODST, except even more so since they don't have the overworld stuff. Yes, it's completely over the top, like Michael Bay and Tom Clancy had a drunken love baby, but it really works. The airport scene for better or worse was amazing, and the very end was great, too. I was yelling at the TV, "Wait, I have a KNIFE! It's right THERE! COME ON!" and lo and behold...

I'm going through getting the low hanging achievements and dabbling is Special Ops and multiplayer now. One other thing I really like about MW2 is that the none of the achievements are multiplayer-specific unless you want to count Special Ops. None of them requires you to get a certain rank in multiplayer or unlock a certain number of killstreak bonuses or anything. I guess they thought the ranks and unlocks were their own achievements. As someone who promptly got his ass handed to himself in multiplayer, I appreciate this.

Caryn, if you or anyone else wants some coop help on the Special Ops stuff, let me know if you see me online.

Drats. The first one didn't really grab me at all (apart from the C130 level), so if they're samey it probably spells doom upon my enjoyment of MW2. Whenever I might get to it.

Tried both MP and Spec Ops today. Loved both. Matt and I played some split screen Spec Ops (Jamie, if you ever want to do co-op Spec Ops we should give it a try sometime) and that was really fun. But I'm HOOKED on MP. Didn't think I'd like it at all but now I'm addicted. I've been playing it all day with breaks to eat, do laundry, and feed the alpacas. I'm around level 12 or so now, I think.

MW1 was pretty great. I found MW2 to be a little patchy, but I was playing on Veteran, so I kept getting my ass handed to me. I think I played through MW1 on normal and then possibly cranked the difficulty up later on. I did played on Vet because I am an achievement whore. I couldn't imagine playing it on hardened.

The story in MW2 was blah at best, MW1 actually had some kind of plausible basis in reality. However, if you're playing Call of Duty for an engaging story, you're a fucking moron. Cool setpieces and big explosions and frantic action FTMFW.

Highlights of the game:
-the Stealth level. Really neat twist on an otherwise horrible FPS idea. They did a really great job with running around a military base unseen.
-Repelling off the cliff. This is near the end of the game, so I wont say too much other than holy fuck that was brutal.
-The BBEG fight. Again, a neat take on what is otherwise a horrible gameplay crutch.
-The snow mobile section. This is the escape after the stealth level goes to shit. Racing down a mountain on a snow mobile with Russian soldiers chasing you on vehicles. Motherfucking James Bond shit right there.
-Walking out of the DC bunker for the first time. Sure, this bit is in the trailers, but the sound effects, music, and visuals were really well done and made quite the impact.

I've been paying attention to a lot of the gaming writers talk about MW2 on various podcasts, and Christ, I've been amazed at how many of them can't understand the plot of the game. Maybe Infinity Ward is at fault for not being clear enough, but it's not exactly rocket science.
