Remember when the Wii was the future of gaming?
January 26th 2010, 01:02 MSK by TreeFrog Attitudes on the 'crap broadly reflect what I hear from my Wii-owning friends and from what little of the gaming press I read - the honeymoon's over and divorce is in the air. What happened? Is it a shortage of games with any depth, since it's cheaper and easier to produce "party game" shovelware? Is the platform's limited horsepower too big an obstacle for devs capable of producing A^64 games? Is motion control just not that big of a deal after all? And what does this mean for future hardware like Natal? |

Meh. iBook only available in the US, fo' shame! Boo. Down in front. Well that was kind of a big attraction for me, so it'll be interesting to see when that stuff appears in Europeland. I gotta say, one of the biggest questions I'm left with is the "scope" of the programs they intend for the iPad. If I can edit my iPhoto galleries and fiddle with iTunes smartlists that's great, I'm really turned on by the possibility of bringing one on vacation instead of my Macbook. But if they end up limiting the iPad apps to simple viewers like on the iPhone… well, it gets a lot less interesting imo. Their signals right now aren't clear to me yet: They'll launch iLife apps that lets you author documents, that indicates a willingness to let it be a device with desktop capabilities where appropriate. On the other hand the iPad iTunes and iPhoto descriptions sound to me a lot more like their iPhone counterparts with limited capabilities. Stuff like no multitasking is weird too, but there are so many rumors about the coming of multitasking that I'm willing to assume it's coming for both it and the iPhone. |

With Bluetooth it sounds technically possible to tether to the iPhone. Or do they expect us to get two totally separate cellphone accounts? I think we'd all like to avoid that. |

#61 by jjohnsen No multitasking, that seems a little weird. And does it really have no usb port? You can get a little dongle for USB or memory cards. But I don't see why you'd need USB anyway. If you need those stuff for more than occasional uses, get a netbook. It's not a netbook. It's a large ipod, or a kindle with some balls, maybe. I think people want it to be something it was never going to be. It's for people that buy netbooks soley so they can surf the web from their couch. Or for people that want kindle, but color and like apps. Of course, I hate netbooks because they are retarded laptops, so I suppose it shouldn't surprise me that people hate the iPad because doesn't change that. Sorry yes, I meant iWork apps. My point is that there'll be apps that lets you create stuff, and that's a direction I'd like to see the iPad moving along. It depends on the apps being developed: No doubt all iPhone developers will make a massive move to quickly upscale their apps and launch it on the iPad part of the store. If that then becomes the expected level of interaction from an iPad app I can see new apps generally staying within what are essentially iPhone limits. But hopefully more applications like the iWork apps will become the norm. Hopefully… |

This is why Apple should buy me as an idea guy: I don't care how exactly, but it'd be neat to be able to browse on my desktop, realize I'm late for work and rush out the door, and then have the same webpages open on my iPad. Bookmarks are already synced so that's one part of the equation solved, next step could be constant syncing of tabs. |

I can't see myself buying one (I'm happy with my iPod Touch for the moment and it seems to be pretty clobbered if you live outside the US a.k.a. the only fucking nation on Earth - seriously, sort your fucking shit out, there are other markets you cunts) but I am intrigued. I could see my wife really enjoying it since all she really does on the internet is check her email, Facebook and a few shopping sites. And that's the crux - I don't think Apple have 99.9% of Internet commentators and forum-based whingers in mind as a fit for this thing so it doesn't really matter what most of us think about its deficiencies. |

I'm going to continue my rant about US-centricism by pointing out that the US doesn't even have the highrest rates of internet/cell penetration in the world; I'm pretty sure most of Western Europe is more connected in that respect but I can't be bothered looking for figures. Why let facts get in the way of a good moan? |

I'm not sure what to make of it to be honest. I understand and agree with a lot of the criticisms about it being less functional than a Netbook and so on but I can't help wondering if people are missing the point. I especially think the guys who are labouring under the illusion that it's a replacement for your MP3 player or iPhone are completely misunderstanding it. Maybe Apple don't see it as a Netbook type device and at this point we don't really get what it is or what role it's going to fulfil. Except I think I kinda do - I can't see it replacing my iPod Touch as a music player, necessarily, but I can see it replacing or supplementing my Touch for the other things I use it for. I.e., browsing the web in bed or on the sofa, casual gaming and reading PDFs and so on. I can see it being more than that in some respects - someone on QT3 described it as a portal to view data stored elsewhere and I can grok that because I already use my Touch for that to some degree. As I mentioned earlier, I can really see my wife digging this for Facebook, browsing and email. |

Oh, and pricing-wise Apple tend to do $1=€1 in Ireland so I think it will be reasonable. The one thing I think is odd - and I'm surprised that I haven't seen anyone else mention this - is that it appears to have retained the same approach to icons etc. as the other iPhoneOS devices even down to the (4x4)+4 grid. Whatever about the lack of stacking or whatever, I'm surprised that with that extra screen estate Apple haven't increased the number of apps on each page and in the dock. |

Since it's a bigger device I would be surprised if it had the capability to multitask. Assuming so, I'd imagine that the iPhone OS would support multitasking sooner rather than later. The Android phones do multitasking and the iPhone Next is going to have to catchup to them soon enough. Assuming that it will have multitasking patched in within a few months, I think the idea to use the iPhone OS is smart. It's lightweight enough that you can achieve the long battery life and instant on that you would expect in a device like that (something that netbooks don't do unless it's waking up from sleep). <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

I don't mean to be rude, but which 833 MHz CPU with 256 MB RAM can't multitask? And If Wikipedia Remembers Correctly, it's got Darwin/BSD-based OS, so there are absolutely no hardware/software barriers. It's just Copy&Paste 2.0. "Behold! We gave you a feature. Bleh, I'm officially not interested in Bioshock 2's multiplayer now. From an article on Joystiq: "the game does not include an option to kick troublesome players. 2K Marin suggests that players report any cheaters and griefers, quit and find a different match." Expanding the discussion to sequels not made by the original devs, I'm rather excited about Bohemia's upcoming Carrier Command sequel/remake/whatever. I think their kind of crazy overambitious kitchen sink design is perfect for the game. BUYBUYBUY

I'm still playing Fallout 3 myself. I beat the game and now I'm exploring the world and slowly doing the Broken Steel add on (the only one I purchased). I know they made this huge world and all, but a LOT of the destinations feel like they could have been fleshed out more. That said, still a mess of fun. I traded Fawkes for the Paladin woman because she'll sneak with me...and I can get around her in doorways. I swear man, I'd go into a small room and be stuck with SLOWLY pushing Fawkes back out in front of me. "Fucking Radio Shack.
