Remember when the Wii was the future of gaming?
January 26th 2010, 01:02 MSK by TreeFrog Attitudes on the 'crap broadly reflect what I hear from my Wii-owning friends and from what little of the gaming press I read - the honeymoon's over and divorce is in the air. What happened? Is it a shortage of games with any depth, since it's cheaper and easier to produce "party game" shovelware? Is the platform's limited horsepower too big an obstacle for devs capable of producing A^64 games? Is motion control just not that big of a deal after all? And what does this mean for future hardware like Natal? |

I'm not too interested watching Avatar without the 3d effect. |
I'm not interested in watching Avatar The Movie at all. The best thing about it as that we're getting another cartoon series. "the concept that a happy worker is a productive worker is hardly an entry from Matt's Big Book Of Things The Fairies Said." - Dum

Matt, are you confusing James Cameron's Avatar with Shamalamadingdong's The Last Airbender? Or is that the joke? The ticket price and the glasses kill it for me. Theaters are already too expensive, and the glasses don't sit comfortably on top of my regular glasses. blog | Twitter | The Psychology of Gaming

Jibble (#749): If Avatar is the benchmark for awesome 3D, then I'm going to have to pass. It didn't add anything to the viewing experience. Yeah, I saw Alice In Wonderland in 2D because Avatar was supposed to be the pinnacle of the new 3D, and it wasn't worth three extra dollars. There hasn't been another movie that was even worth seeing at all, let alone in 3D. "I hope you one day decide to smarten the fuck up so I can stand to look at your posts." - gaggle

Yeah, I conflating to harp on how much The Last Airbender sucks. And I've only seen 2m of it. "the concept that a happy worker is a productive worker is hardly an entry from Matt's Big Book Of Things The Fairies Said." - Dum

Why are you complaining about being able to write in proper English in a tweet when you can't do it in a non-tweet?! |

Heh. |

3D gives me a shitting awful headache. It was worth it for the spectacle of Avatar, but so few other movies actually make worthwhile use of it. - words and stuff -

Dude, didn't you get the memo? Avatar was crap in every respect. |

Avatar looked nice. BUYBUYBUY

The look of Avatar was its only redeeming quality. But it was a big one and made it worth watching all by itself. blog | Twitter | The Psychology of Gaming

Yeah. In 3d. |
I enjoyed it overall. The plot wasn't exactly new but it's not like it was offensive either (unless you're suffering from an excess of white guilt) and the action scenes were great. |
I LOVED the scenery and graphics and the animation. They did a great job with the animation of the faces. And while the story wasn't unique, I think it's one that needs to be told over and over until people get it. I'd give it an A rating. gaggle (#763): Yeah. In 3d. I didn't feel that the 3D added anything of value. There were a few shots that were cool, but there were a lot more that were annoying and distracting. The movie would've still been gorgeous and impressive in 2D, and I wouldn't've ended up with a headache. "I hope you one day decide to smarten the fuck up so I can stand to look at your posts." - gaggle

The 3D was cool in places but it shouldn't be necessary. A good director would not need 3D to make the dragon flights feel like flying. And no amount of 3D could fix the average plot. She's probably had sex with like 4 different guys by now and has no idea who he is anymore, his face lost in a memory sea of dicks.

Walk away? Are we busy discussing something else? If you guys are scared, just say it. "the concept that a happy worker is a productive worker is hardly an entry from Matt's Big Book Of Things The Fairies Said." - Dum

Speaking of which, I just watched District 9 the other day. It was a much better version of the story, though a little bit grosser than it needed to be. "I hope you one day decide to smarten the fuck up so I can stand to look at your posts." - gaggle
So you're scared, that's cool. That was the first time you saw District 9? Liked it over all? "the concept that a happy worker is a productive worker is hardly an entry from Matt's Big Book Of Things The Fairies Said." - Dum
I liked it. I thought the aliens were a little too anthropomorphic and parts of the plot were a little hoaky, but it was a solid movie. And the acting and effects were very good. Compared to Avatar, which was retarded and had a lot of really dumb-looking creature design. "I hope you one day decide to smarten the fuck up so I can stand to look at your posts." - gaggle

1) I just saw Hubble in IMAX today and wished it was the 3D version. I saw a 3D pre-view for it, but the theater I was at wasn't in 3D. Lame. 2) District 9 pales in comparison to the short they did and what promise that movie held. I wanted to see the short made into a full length feature, not what we go. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

District 9 was much better than the short. BUYBUYBUY

This is the TV thread, right? Just saw the first episode of the new Nikita series. Even Maggie Q, one of the most stunning women ever to walk the earth, won't be enough to get me to keep watching it if the second episode is just as bad. Anyone watching Boardwalk Empire? Set in the 20's, snaggletooth Steve Buscemi in it, sound awesome. |
It's alright. Terriers is better. |
Nikita gets a little better but it's just enemy of the week stuff. Not great. I love Terriers and Boardwalk Empire. |
Isn't Terriers in trouble? Boardwalk Empire is good. <Hugin_len> Basically, cheesy doesn't have awful taste in music, he's simply very white.

I hope Terriers isn't in trouble. It's great though, so people are probably skipping it for dancing with the stars (or whatever crap is on at the same time. |

So Perpetuum is in open beta. Anyone want to try it out with me? I'm in the Truhold-Markson corp. "One part disembowels me while another slowly eats its way through the gas line. As I bleed out on the floor, it reminds me that I need to buy milk." - Jibble

Actually that's the conglomerate, i'm in Gremlon corp. Sci-fi! "One part disembowels me while another slowly eats its way through the gas line. As I bleed out on the floor, it reminds me that I need to buy milk." - Jibble

It sounds like Nether Earth meets DUST 514. I'll look into it tomorrow. Parhelic Triangle is coming. Eventually.

I installed it, but haven't tried it yet. I'll give it a shot tonight. Gremlon Corp here I come! "programmers talk from a very deep gnome cavern, full of gold mechanics" - wisdom from the ancients

It's...interesting...still going through rather long boring tutorial. What's the point here? I killed a drone... "programmers talk from a very deep gnome cavern, full of gold mechanics" - wisdom from the ancients

It's an MMO. Does any of them have a point? Apparenly it's like EVE, but with robots. I never played EVE, so that doesn't mean much to me. Yeah, the tutorial is dire. Well, I mean...in WoW, for instance, I can explore, do moderately interesting quests, see cool landscapes, mine ore...oh well I can do that last one in Perp. I'll play it some more, but the introduction is basically a test to see if I can make it past it to see if there is more fun gameplay on the other side. I love my little spider dude. I'm wary of the UI with it's literal hundred different windows. The place I start is...bland at best. Normally I like a game to grab me. The Dwarven starting area in WoW, the Arthurian starting area in DaoC, the killing bunnines and dying to PKers in UO. Er, scratch that last one. But you get my point. I like to be engaged, not have to struggle through the beginning in the hope it gets better. "programmers talk from a very deep gnome cavern, full of gold mechanics" - wisdom from the ancients
Speaking of the future of gaming, I should probably check out WoW one of these days just so I'll have the reference point historically. I have a free trial DVD laying around the house somewhere. What are the must-see bits in WoW, taking into account that there is literally ZERO chance that I will play beyond the trial period or play with anybody besides complete strangers? |

Wait a month. BUYBUYBUY

Do what Bob says. It's in upheaval right now. Both in terms of content and bugs. They are implementing the next expansion slowly but surely to the release date of Dec 12 (I think). After that, a week or two after that, would be the best time to play. "programmers talk from a very deep gnome cavern, full of gold mechanics" - wisdom from the ancients
The expansion comes out December 7th (so much for a date that will live in infamy, eh Perkins?) and will be preceded by the titular cataclysm, after which the entirety of the 1-60 content will be completely replaced. This will happen for everyone in the game, expansion or no. Basically they're making WoW 2 using what they've learned since WoW launched, and replacing the existing WoW with it. So there's no point in doing all the old crappy content now. I'm probably going to give another trial a shot right after the cataclysm hits rather than waiting after the expansion's launch. BUYBUYBUY
